Kandinsky: a pioneer of his time

Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow, Russia on December 16, 1866. He was one of the most important 20th-century artists (painter, print maker). He painted some of the first modern abstract works.

He grew up in the Russian city of Odessa. When he was little he played the piano and the cello. Kandinsky was one of the founding fathers of Abstract Art, in which shapes and colors alone could be art.

He felt that he could express feelings and music through colors and shapes in his paintings. For example, he thought that yellow had the crisp sound of a brass trumpet.

The shapes he was most interested in were the circle, triangle, and the square. This great artist used to say that “Everything starts from a dot”. In a sense this means that sometimes when you struggle starting a drawing or a painting, you should just start by just putting a simple dot, then everything will get easier.
